Calculating siding is almost always done in "Squares".
1 Square = 100 square feet.

Typical Box Contents

  • Vinyl Siding: Typically 2 Squares (200 sq ft) per carton.
  • Fiber Cement (Hardie): Sold by the piece (plank). One plank covers approx 8.25 sq ft (assuming 8.25" width with 7" exposure). You need roughly 12 pieces per square.
  • Cedar Shakes: Sold in bundles. Usually 4 or 5 bundles per Square depending on exposure.

How many pieces of siding are in a box?

A standard box (carton) of vinyl siding typically covers 2 squares (200 sq ft). It usually contains 22 to 24 panels, depending on the profile (Double 4, Double 5, Dutch Lap). Always check the specific product coverage.

How do I calculate starter strips?

Starter strips are required at the bottom of every wall. calculate the total linear footage of the base of all walls involved. Standard starter strips are 10 feet long.
