When choosing sheathing for your build, the debate often comes down to Plywood vs. OSB (Oriented Strand Board). Both are rated for structural use, but they have distinct differences.

Both are code-approved, but Plywood is generally preferred for subfloors under hardwood or tile because it swells less if it gets wet and holds fasteners slightly better. OSB is standard for carpeted areas and is more budget-friendly.
A standard 4x8 sheet of 3/4-inch softwood plywood weighs approximately 68-70 lbs. Pressure-treated plywood will weigh significantly more.
For rafters spaced 24 inches apart, 1/2-inch (actually 15/32) CDX plywood or 7/16 OSB is the standard minimum requirement in most building codes.
