Plywood vs. OSB: What Should You Use?

When choosing sheathing for your build, the debate often comes down to Plywood vs. OSB (Oriented Strand Board). Both are rated for structural use, but they have distinct differences.

Plywood Pros

  • • Lighter than OSB (easier to carry)
  • • Swells less when wet (dries faster)
  • • Holds screws/nails slightly better
  • • Better for subfloors under tile

OSB Pros

  • • More consistent (no knots/voids)
  • • Significantly cheaper
  • • Available in larger panels (up to 16')
  • • Greener (uses small trees/waste)

Common Thickness Guidelines

ApplicationRecommended ThicknessSpan (Standard)
Wall Sheathing3/8" or 1/2"16" or 24" o.c.
Roof Sheathing1/2" (15/32) or 5/8"24" o.c.
Subfloor3/4" (23/32)16", 19.2" or 24" o.c.

FAQ

Should I use Plywood or OSB for subfloors?

Both are code-approved, but Plywood is generally preferred for subfloors under hardwood or tile because it swells less if it gets wet and holds fasteners slightly better. OSB is standard for carpeted areas and is more budget-friendly.

How much does a sheet of 3/4 plywood weigh?

A standard 4x8 sheet of 3/4-inch softwood plywood weighs approximately 68-70 lbs. Pressure-treated plywood will weigh significantly more.

What thickness should I use for roofing?

For rafters spaced 24 inches apart, 1/2-inch (actually 15/32) CDX plywood or 7/16 OSB is the standard minimum requirement in most building codes.
