Get the perfect lush lawn. Calculate exact seed quantities.
Don't just throw seed on hard dirt. For new lawns, till typically the top 3-4 inches of soil. For overseeding, aerate the lawn first to expose soil and improve seed-to-soil contact.
Keep it moist! New seed needs to stay constantly damp (not soaked) for the first 2-3 weeks. If the seed dries out after germinating, it dies instantly. Water lightly 2-3 times a day until established.
New Lawns require roughly double the amount of seed to establish dense coverage on bare soil. Overseeding helps thicken existing grass and requires less seed (typically half the new lawn rate).
For cool-season grasses (Fescue, Bluegrass, Ryegrass), early fall is ideal. For warm-season grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia), late spring or early summer is best when soil temperatures are warm.
Kentucky Bluegrass seeds are extremely small (approx 1.4 million seeds per lb), so you need fewer pounds to cover an area compared to Tall Fescue seeds, which are much larger (approx 220,000 seeds per lb).
