Include padding/install if desired.
The golden rule of carpet installation is to minimize visible seams.
If your room is 14 feet wide and you buy a 12-foot roll, you will have a 2-foot seam running the entire length of the room. In this case, opting for a 15-foot wide roll (if available) would eliminate the seam entirely and likely look much better.
Carpet padding is essential for comfort and longevity. It is often sold separately but measured in the same unit (square feet or square yards). Always match the quality of the padding to the quality of the carpet.
Carpet is often priced by the square foot in stores (e.g., $3.00/sq ft), but some contractors and older measurements use 'Square Yards'. There are 9 square feet in 1 square yard.
Standard rolls are 12 feet wide. Some premium carpets come in 15-foot widths. If your room is 13 feet wide, a 12-foot roll will require a seam (joining two pieces), whereas a 15-foot roll would cover it seamlessly.
For rectangular rooms, 10% is standard. For rooms with angles, stairs, or complex shapes, add 15-20% to account for cuts and pattern matching.
