The golden rule of carpet installation is to minimize visible seams.
If your room is 14 feet wide and you buy a 12-foot roll, you will have a 2-foot seam running the entire length of the room. In this case, opting for a 15-foot wide roll (if available) would eliminate the seam entirely and likely look much better.
