Bitrate Explained

Bitrate is the amount of data processed per second in a video file. It is the single most important factor determining video quality and file size.

Common Bitrates (H.264)

  • 1080p 30fps: 3,500 - 5,000 Kbps
  • 1080p 60fps: 4,500 - 6,000 Kbps
  • 1440p 60fps: 9,000 - 18,000 Kbps
  • 4K 60fps: 20,000 - 51,000 Kbps

Note: Newer codecs like H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 are more efficient and can achieve similar quality at 30-50% lower bitrates.

FAQ

What is a good bitrate for 1080p streaming?

For Twitch/YouTube, 6,000 Kbps (6 Mbps) is the standard recommendation for 1080p 60fps streaming. For 1080p 30fps, 4,500 Kbps is sufficient.

Does higher bitrate always mean better quality?

Up to a point. Once you exceed the efficiency of the codec or the resolution limits, higher bitrate yields distinguishingly diminishing returns while massively increasing file size.

How do I calculate file size manually?

File Size = (Bitrate x Duration) / 8. Remember to convert units carefully (Bits to Bytes).
