What is a Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator helps you quickly determine the appropriate gratuity to leave at restaurants, salons, and other service establishments. It can also split the bill evenly among multiple people, calculating each person's share including the tip.

The Tip Calculation Formula

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)
Total = Bill Amount + Tip Amount

How Much Should You Tip?

United States Tipping Guidelines

  • Restaurants: 15-20% is standard; 18-25% for great service
  • Delivery: $2-5 or 15-20% of the order
  • Hair Salons: 15-20% of the service cost
  • Taxis/Rideshare: 15-20% of the fare
  • Hotels: $1-5 per bag for bellhop; $2-5/night for housekeeping

Quick Mental Math Tricks

  • 10% tip: Move decimal one place left ($80 → $8.00)
  • 15% tip: Calculate 10% and add half (10% + 5%)
  • 20% tip: Calculate 10% and double it ($80 → $16.00)

Tipping Etiquette

In the United States, tipping is customary and often makes up a significant portion of service workers' income. The standard tip for satisfactory restaurant service is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate.
