Understanding Steps to Miles
Walking 10,000 steps a day is a popular fitness goal, but what does that actually mean in distance? The distance you cover depends entirely on your stride length, which is influenced by your height and gender.
How Stride Length is Calculated
This calculator estimates your stride length using statistical averages:
- Women: Height × 0.413
- Men: Height × 0.415
For example, a woman who is 5'4" (64 inches) typically has a stride length of about 26.4 inches (2.2 feet).
Tips for Accuracy
While the height-based formula is accurate for most, measuring your own stride gives the best results. To do this, mark a start line, walk 10 normal steps, mark the landing spot of your 10th step, measure the distance, and divide by 10. Enter this value in the "Custom Stride Length" field for precision.
