Projector Placement Guide

Setting up a projector requires precise measurements. The Throw Ratio is the most important specification to understand.

The Golden Formula

Throw Distance = Screen Width × Throw Ratio

Types of Projectors

  • Long Throw (Ratio 2.0+): Installed in the back of large halls or cinemas.
  • Standard Throw (Ratio 1.3 - 2.0): Most home theater projectors. Placed behind the seating area or on the ceiling.
  • Short Throw (Ratio 0.4 - 1.0): Placed on a coffee table or ceiling closer to the screen.
  • Ultra Short Throw (Ratio < 0.4): Sits directly below the screen on a TV stand (Laser TVs).

FAQ

What is Throw Ratio?

Throw ratio is the relation between the distance from the screen and the width of the screen. Formula: Ratio = Distance / Width.

What is the difference between Short Throw and Long Throw?

Short throw projectors (Ratio < 1.0) can create large images from very close distances. Standard throw (Ratio 1.5 - 2.0) projectors need to be placed at the back of the room.

How do I calculate screen width from diagonal?

For a standard 16:9 HDTV screen, the width is approximately 0.87 times the diagonal measurement.
