Understanding PPI (Pixels Per Inch)

PPI stands for Pixels Per Inch. It is a measurement of the pixel density (resolution) of an electronic image device, such as a computer monitor or television screen.

The PPI Formula

dₚ = √(w² + h²)PPI = dₚ / dᵢ

Where w=width pixels, h=height pixels, dᵢ=diagonal size in inches

How much PPI is enough?

  • Standard Monitor (24" 1080p): ~92 PPI. Good for general use.
  • High-End Monitor (27" 1440p): ~109 PPI. Sharper text and UI.
  • 4K Monitor (27" 4K): ~163 PPI. Extremely sharp, "Retina" quality viewing.
  • Smartphones: 300-460+ PPI. Because phones are held close to the face, they require much higher density to appear smooth.

FAQ

What differs PPI from DPI?

PPI (Pixels Per Inch) refers to digital displays and input devices. DPI (Dots Per Inch) typically refers to printed resolution, though the terms are often used interchangeably.

What is a 'Retina' display PPI?

Apple defines 'Retina' loosely as a PPI high enough that the human eye cannot distinguish individual pixels at a normal viewing distance. For phones, this is usually 300+ PPI; for laptops, 220+ PPI.

Why does PPI matter?

Higher PPI means sharper images and text. Low PPI results in pixelation or 'screen door effect', especially on large monitors sitting close to the user.
