Factor Properties

Factor Rules

• 1 is a factor of every number
• Every number is a factor of itself
• Factors come in pairs (except for perfect squares)
• Prime numbers have exactly 2 factors

Perfect Squares

• Have an odd number of factors
• One factor pairs with itself
• Examples: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36...

Prime Numbers

• Have exactly 2 factors: 1 and itself
• Cannot be factored further
• Building blocks of all numbers
• Examples: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13...

Composite Numbers

• Have more than 2 factors
• Can be broken down into prime factors
• Most numbers are composite
• Examples: 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12...

Examples

Example 1: Factors of 24

Factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24
Prime factorization: 24 = 2³ × 3
Number of factors: (3+1) × (1+1) = 8
Factor pairs: (1,24), (2,12), (3,8), (4,6)

Example 2: Factors of 17

Factors: 1, 17
Prime factorization: 17 (prime number)
Number of factors: 2
Factor pairs: (1,17)
