Statistical Measures

Mean (Average)

Mean = Sum ÷ Count
The arithmetic average of all values. Most common measure of central tendency.

Median

The middle value when numbers are arranged in order. Less affected by outliers than mean.

Mode

The most frequently occurring value(s). Useful for categorical data and finding common values.

Range

Range = Max - Min
Measures the spread or variability of the data set.

Examples

Example 1: Test Scores

Data: 85, 92, 78, 96, 89
Mean: (85+92+78+96+89) ÷ 5 = 88
Median: 89 (middle value when sorted: 78, 85, 89, 92, 96)
Mode: No mode (all values appear once)
Range: 96 - 78 = 18

Example 2: With Outlier

Data: 10, 12, 11, 13, 100
Mean: 29.2 (affected by outlier 100)
Median: 12 (not affected by outlier)
This shows why median is often better for skewed data
