What is Lean Body Mass?

Lean Body Mass (LBM) is the weight of everything in your body except for fat. This includes muscles, bones, water, organs, and skin. Knowing your LBM is crucial for setting nutrition goals, especially for protein intake, and for tracking actual muscle growth versus just weight gain.

Why Use Formulas?

While DEXA scans and hydrostatic weighing are the gold standards, mathematical formulas provide a reasonably accurate estimate for most people using basic measurements like height and weight.

  • Boer Formula: considered the standard for most adults.
  • Hume Formula: Another widely used formula, often appearing in medical calculators.
  • James Formula: Often used but known to underestimate LBM in individuals with high body fat.
