Mathematical Principles

Calculating gravel needs involves finding the volume of the space and then converting that volume into weight based on the material's density.

1. Volume Calculation

First, calculate the volume in cubic feet:
Volume (ft³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)

2. Cubic Yards Conversion

Convert cubic feet to cubic yards (the standard unit for bulk delivery):
Volume (yd³) = Volume (ft³) / 27

3. Weight Estimation

Multiply the volume by the material's density. Standard gravel weighs about 2,700 lbs per cubic yard.
Weight (lbs) = Volume (yd³) × Density (lbs/yd³)
To get tons, divide by 2,000.
