Calculate volume and water weight for your aquarium setup.
Surface area is crucial for gas exchange (oxygen entering the water). A long, shallow tank often supports more fish than a tall, narrow tank of the same volume.
A classic (though simplified) rule is "one inch of fish per gallon of water." However, this only applies to small, slim fish like tetras. Large fish like goldfish or cichlids produce much more waste and need far more volume per inch.
Avoid placing tanks in direct sunlight (promotes algae) or near drafts/vents (causes temperature fluctuation). Ensure the stand can support the full weight (Water is ~8.34 lbs/gallon).
