We calculate the Net Cost of Ownership (Mortgage payments + taxes + maintenance + closing costs - final home equity) vs the Cost of Renting (Rent + insurance - returns from investing the down payment elsewhere). Assumptions: 3% home appreciation, 3% rent inflation, 6% investment return.
