Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to dogs. Unlike humans, dogs metabolize these substances much more slowly, allowing toxic levels to build up in their system. The darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Baking chocolate and cocoa powder are the most toxic, while white chocolate has minimal theobromine.
