Benefits of Cycling

Cycling uses large muscle groups in the legs, which consumes oxygen and burns calories effectively. It's great for cardiovascular health and building muscle endurance without the impact stress of running.

Stationary vs. Outdoor Biking

In general, outdoor biking can burn slightly more calories due to wind resistance and stability muscles used for balance. However, stationary biking classes (like spinning) can be extremely intense and burn a massive amount of calories due to interval training. This calculator uses MET values derived from general cycling activities.

MET Values for Cycling

  • < 10 mph (Leisure): 4.0 METs
  • 12-14 mph (Moderate): 8.0 METs
  • > 20 mph (Racing): 16.8 METs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is biking better than running for your knees?

Yes, cycling is a low-impact exercise. It places significantly less stress on your joints compared to high-impact activities like running, making it ideal for people with knee issues or those recovering from injury.

How many calories does 1 hour of biking burn?

A 160 lb person biking at a moderate pace (12-14 mph) can burn approximately 600-800 calories in an hour.

Does riding an e-bike burn calories?

Yes, but fewer than a regular bike depending on the assist level. MET studies suggest e-biking (pedal assist) burns about 30-50% fewer calories than conventional cycling, but enables longer durations and distances.

How does wind resistance affect calorie burn?

Wind resistance (drag) increases exponentially with speed. At speeds above 10 mph, most of your energy goes into overcoming air resistance. MET values for outdoor cycling already factor in typical environmental conditions.
