What is a Board Foot?

A Board Foot (BF) is a unit of volume measurement for lumber used in the United States and Canada. It equals the volume of a one-foot length of a board that is one foot wide and one inch thick.

The Formula

The explicit formula depends on the units you use:

Length in Feet

BF = (T × W × L) ÷ 12

Length in Inches

BF = (T × W × L) ÷ 144

Common Board Foot Examples

  • 1x12, 1 ft long: 1 BF
  • 2x6, 1 ft long: 1 BF
  • 2x4, 8 ft long: 5.33 BF
  • 4x4, 8 ft long: 10.67 BF

Why Buy by the Board Foot?

Hardwood lumber is often sold rough-sawn and by volume rather than by piece (linear foot). This allows woodworkers to pay for exactly the amount of wood fiber they are getting, regardless of specific widths.
