About Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that uses height and weight to estimate body fat. It is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (kg/m²). BMI is widely used to classify individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on standard ranges.

However, BMI has limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass, so muscular individuals may have a high BMI without excess body fat. It may also be inaccurate for children, the elderly, or pregnant women. Use BMI as a general guideline and consult a healthcare provider for a comprehensive assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is generally considered normal (healthy). BMI below 18.5 is classified as underweight, and BMI above 24.9 falls into overweight (25–29.9) or obese (30 and above) categories. Keep in mind these are general guidelines and individual health can vary.
