Understanding BAC
Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is a metric used to measure the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream. It is calculated based on the weight of the alcohol in a certain volume of blood.
Factors Influencing BAC
- Body Weight: Heavier individuals have more water in their bodies, which dilutes alcohol more effectively.
- Gender: Men typically metabolize alcohol differently than women due to enzyme levels and body composition.
- Food: Eating food before or while drinking slows the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream.
- Time: The only thing that lowers BAC is time. Coffee, showers, or water do not sobriety you up faster.
Legal Limits
In the United States, the federal legal limit for driving is 0.08%. However, impairment begins much earlier. Commercial drivers often have a limit of 0.04%.
